The Liar, by David Ives, adapted from Le Menteur by Pierre Corneille, is a fast paced romp full of fluid and hilarious energy. The lighting design needs to mirror and accentuate that energy. Our version was set in Paris in the 1960s, full of stylish people playing manipulative games with each other. I began by researching the real Paris locations in photography, but quickly shifted to more more whimsical paintings and then to French pop art to find the style of the show. In tech rehearsals we shifted to an even more heightened theatricality that verged on a rock-and-roll feel, particularly in the elaborate transitions that featured French versions of popular American songs.
